Lost In Translation: How Language Barriers in the Caribbean Hinder Real Regional Integration
Abstract: Real integration is about 'people'. People thrive, grow, develop as a community and establish, maintain and strengthen common ties through communication. If, as Caribbean 'brothers and sisters, ' we are unable to effectively communicate amongst ourselves through meaningful channels, do we not restrict ourselves to merely being distant neighbors in mini sub-regions carved along a language divide, passively viewing each other from across the silent chasm? I want to know my brother/sister and he/she wants to know me, but we only speak the language of distance, and our desire to engage as siblings of one Caribbean family becomes completely lost in translation
