Undiagnosed Disorders: Coping in the Light of Our Customs.
Abstract: Many disorders listed in the DSM have long been among the Haitian population, unidentified, dealt with in their own special way. Many known disruptive behaviors are considered close to normal: Children with possible ODD are regularly spanked, Haitian children torture animals as group games, and the daily life is filled with anecdotes about Enuresis. How do the Haitian people address these issues and how their ways of dealing with these disorders actually impact on them?
