Substance Use Disorders: A Public Health Perspective for the Caribbean

This presentation will review certain fundamental features of professional public health, including its multi-disciplinary, prospective and promotive orientation, and its harm-reduction mission. It will highlight alcohol and tobacco as the agents (drugs) with the greatest public health threat, especially in the context of chronic, non-communicable diseases, and their complications; which overwhelm many Caribbean healthcare systems. The adoption of an integrative, interdisciplinary and multifocal psychological practice is recommended as part of our distinctly Caribbean approach.
